Neon Vomit, tfo, B-lite at AS220 09/11/2004

Last nights B-Lite/tfo/Neon Vomit show at AS220 was a blast!

First, Neon Vomit: I got there a little late, actually it was a last minute decision to go, so I missed all but two songs of their set. When I walked in they were doing a Backstreet Boys cover and the crowd was really into it. It was cheesy 80's synth music. There seemed to be a lot of gayboys there just to see them, since they cleared out when NV's set was done. What was up with the asian trans-sexual (?) in the silver spacesuit?

tfo went on next: These 3 guys consisted of a guitar player, a violinist , and a guy seated at a laptop with a cigarette in his hand the whole time. There were cool politically themed visuals projected onto the walls during the set while long spacey jams and loops provided the background music. The songs blended into each other without any breaks. There were no vocals other than samples and loops that would show up occasionally. It was very interesting.

Next, the one, the only, B-Lite: B-lite is a "blind", white rapper who sings about the struggles of being "blind", satan, slacking, drugs, and sex. The blindness is metaphoric. He uses a Powerpoint presentation which is projected onto a screen behind him. This presentation features static images of pornography, owls, and stolen tv's amongst other things, with B-lite in the middle of almost every image.

This was my third time seeing B-lite, and when I mentioned that to him, he seemed kind of surprised and appreciative, which was cool. As for his set, it was much better than last time. The "Naughty Nurses" brought him out in a wheelchair, with his head bandaged. The nurses unwrapped the bandages, then B-lite was ready to go! He started out with "Introducing B-lite", and managed to wheel to the bar and order a beer in the middle of the song. Apparantly the beer worked, because he was feeling it, and the crowd, and was able to stand up with a walker.
Next, he did a shot of whiskey via a funnel, administered by the Naughty Nurses. He seemed to really be enjoying the character he was playing, and the crowd loved it!
All in all, it was a good show and would have been a better time if my friends hadnt cancelled out.
